Webcam images

From DoWire Wiki

Full motion video does create a closer connection for citizens watching public meetings. However, we've decided with Democaster that a low-cost webcam option would add value to audio casts. This applies in particular to meetings where a video camera and video capture cards are not a viable option.

Our goal is to upload quality (pre-processed?) JPEGs to the live broadcast server via the event console so the player or HTML meeting page can use javascript to download a fresh image every 5 to 15 seconds. An archived audio file would be enhanced with synchronized images via our player applet, while those using their own media player could flip through a slide show manually.

We are also considering an event console option where before or after a meeting (numbered?) JPEG images could be uploaded and tagged to appear at certain time in the player when viewing archived webcasts. This would allow a producer to share digital photos, PowerPoint slides saved as JPEGs, or other image-based content.

With Linux (our likely server platform) there are a number of framegrabbing applications that need to be evaluated.

The DNA Lounge, a bar in San Fransico, uses Icecast and offers the code for their webcam slideshow scripts.
