This text drafted for the Democaster specification.

Just as we encourage governments to explore the use of webcasting for Elected Official Videos and other short and snappy content like how to sort your trash for recycling, we will encourage the use of Democaster for short audio updates from public officials as well as to make well compressed full meeting audio files available for download/podacast in MP3 and perhaps other formats.

Short audio files

What would you listen to first? A two hour audio recording of a public meeting or a five minute meeting summary "reported" by your councillor or top civil servant. With our telephone options, we envision the integration of Democaster with RSS headline syndication and podcasting.

Also, an elected official with a website or blog could integrate this audio into their site quite easily.

Because each producer will likely need their own account on our system (versus one account for a city that is used by multiple elected officials), suddenly a mobile phone with a speaker phone mode could be used (legally) to webcast an impromptu small in-person meeting that could send an e-mail notice out those who have signed up for them. It should be noted other than some interactive options that Democaster is not a two-way meeting tool, for that you need teleconference and online meeting tools.

A lot of tips on sound quality and other podcasting tips] should be leveraged in our own advice to Democasters.

We should note if we moved out of demonstration mode, we would be complementing services like:

Articles to read and sites to check out:

  • How to Record a Podcast – an article on turning interviews into podcasts using entirely digital production methods that would allow phone calls to record directly to MP3
  • OpenPodcast.org - A dynamically generated podcast to which anyone can contribute.
  • Audioblog.com - audio (and video!) publishing service that puts your voice in your weblog or online journal.
  • iPodder.org - small program that runs on your computer. Its only purpose is to download audio files, usually mp3's, directly to your mp3 device.
