Online civil initiative

Online civil initiative can be an useful instrument for local governments to implement an e-democracy strategy. Citizens have the possibility to present their ideas and proposals to the local government and the local authorities can get informed about local issues. In a democratic way can be decided by the council on how to deal with these issues.

In Zoetermeer (the Netherlands), this year a similar initiative has been introduced. By means of a special website (http://www.zoetermeer.nl/burgerinitiatief ; in Dutch), citizens can formulate a proposal to the town-council. Recently, two proposals have been presented, both on special playgrounds in the city. At this moment – December 2004 – the local council is reviewing both initiatives.
