About

International Symposium on Local e-Democracy
Tuesday, July 26 - Wednesday, July 27, 2005
Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
http://dowire.org/localedem

Sponsored by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister in the United Kingdom and the UK Local e-Democracy National Project with the help of our conference partners.

The International Symposium is a dynamic one day conference exploring leading e-democracy trends around the world followed with field visits to area government and community e-democracy projects the next day.

This is the world's first international conference focused on local e-democracy. Although it will still be highly relevant to all levels of governance. Plenary panel speakers and small group sessions on the symposium agenda will highlight leading e-democracy activities from all levels of government and society. If you are interested in governance and citizen participation in the information age, this conference is for you.

Pre-Conference Gathering July 25

With most delegates expected to arrive the day before the official conference, a "tailgating" social gathering co-hosted by E-Democracy.Org at an outdoor minor league St. Paul Saints baseball game the evening of Monday, July 25 is in the works.

Themes and Agenda - July 26

Registration opens at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26 at the Humphrey Center, University of Minnesota, just blocks from the conference hotel.

The symposium agenda covers a broad swatch of issues and perspectives relevant to all levels of governance with an emphasis on local communities.

Plenary panel themes include:

  • Informed Elections - From e-voting to voter education online
  • e-Government and Democracy - Leading e-democracy practices in governance and civic education
  • Local Citizens and Community Online - Citizen e-activism, local blogging, and media online
  • e-Democracy at Home and Abroad - Researchers Roundtable

To get a sense of these emerging themes, note the UK highlights from the global e-democracy best practice research effort of the UK Local E-democracy National Project.

60 Second Pitch

Do you have an e-democracy project, idea, technology, etc. that you want to share? Can you explain it with passion in 60 seconds and one slide? Props allowed. Up to 10 of you will have a chance, but be succinct or the hook will pull you off stage.

Stay tuned for details on the most energy filled minutes on e-democracy ever. Contact us with your preliminary pitches and add projects to our list of local e-democracy projects.

Small Group Sessions

You can help shape the agenda.

Small group sessions convened by conference participants will allow extensive interaction among attendees on specific topics. At least five unique topics will be selected.

Field Day - July 27

See e-democracy in action.

The field trip includes a visit to the "wired" chambers of the Minnesota State Legislature and Northfield, Minnesota's community blogging efforts.

Along the way, short presentations will bring e-democracy to life as we travel through the "real" world.

Before returning to the hotel, the bus will stop at the Minneapolis/St. Paul airport by 3:15 p.m. on our return from Northfield. This will provide ample time for those taking direct international flights from Minneapolis via NWA/KLM or Icelandair to Europe in the evening.

You will need to RSVP for this optional day (the price for the symposium is the same regardless) via our online conference registration system. Lunch will be available in Northfield at a moderate price.

Cost

We expect 50 to 100 participants. The fee for the conference is a modest $125 US (~70 GBP, 102 Euros). The enrolled student rate is $75 US.

This will cover your symposium participation and the luncheon. For those joining us on the field trip, transportation will be provided at no additional cost.

Hotel accommodation, with free Wi-Fi Internet access, is available at the Holiday Inn Minneapolis Metrodome. The July 4th conference hotel rate offer has expired, but their current discount Internet rate as of July 8 is only $25 more a night.

We encourage you to explore the Twin Cities of Minnesota as well as arrange additional meetings and activities.

Flights and other travel costs are the responsibilty of all those attending including speakers. See our symposium transportation page for advice.
