Get started

From DoWire Wiki

Welcome to the new world of knowledge exchange - the wiki.

The trick with this wiki is that every participant is able to work on a ongoing common draft. This helps generate ideas and corrections quickly.

If you are repeat visitor to DoWire.Org, you probably noticed a number of changes. To get really involved in this collaborative community, follow these steps:

1. Sign up for the Democracies Online Newswire e-mail announcement list. It is not yet integrated into the new site. If anything really important happens, you'll hear about it on the list.

2. Create a wiki account here We ask you to use your full name as your user login.

3. Fill out your User: page. Here are our current users: Include your Skype or Instant Messenger handle if you like. We encourage use of Yahoo Instant Messenger because it works on multiple platforms. Skype is great for high quality, free voice conversations.

4. Spend three minutes (that is all it takes) reading up on how to edit a page. A wiki allows you to edit or comment on web pages on this site. It is super easy.

Some mini-tips:

Use * at the beginning of a line, and

  • Look, an item on a list
  • Another item

Or, use # as first sign on a line and, see:

  1. Numbered items
  2. Another one

See links in our Help:Contents section for more technical tips.

Here is an external link to Wikipedia's tutorial.

Press "Edit" above to see the behind the scenes text of this page. You can actually edit it right now if you want. It is that easy. We protect only the top level pages and we can restore previous pages if someone messes up. Press "Discussion" above, then "+" to add a comment.

Around the page This Wiki we discuss our own wiki-environment.

5. Are you more of a surfer than a writer? Join our Shared Bookmarks effort. We are using a third-party service called del.icio.us. Yes, it is a weird name.

6. Finally, if you haven't already, apply to join our e-democracy Best Practices Leadership Team (at the bottom of our Submissions page or check out our Webcasting CoP (community of practice). In the future, we plan to integrate our other Democracies Online communities into the new site.
