Democaster and open source
From DoWire Wiki
Democaster made economically and technically possible through the use of a number of open source and free to use proprietary tools including:
- Icecast2 - GPL open source webcast streaming server
- Ogg Audio - Non-proprietary audio format for encoding webcasts from Vorbis
- Oddcast - GPL open source Winamp plug-in for encoding audio
- FWink - GPL open source webcam image program
- StreamTranscoder - A tool to covert Ogg audio for MP3 access at the server level
- RedHat Linux ??? - Server
- Winamp - A free-to-use proprietary audio player
- Flash MP3 Player - A tool that allows simple MP3 playback via Flash-enabled web browsers
The original "glue" that pulls this together is original code written in Java for scheduling and automatic archiving of live webcasts.
Democaster has not been funded to release its original code. Proper support for third-party use of the code or creation of a new open source community is well beyond the small 25,000 GBP budget for this part of the Enhanced Webcasting pilot. This option would only be explored with funder interest.
